I'll often cheat and do a base of very light grey and then drybrush white. OR just a billion coats of VERY thin white paint.
Yes, you don't need pure white to get perceptual white. Any off-white that goes on better than your pure white could work. I've combined what Sean says, although my base coat tends to be darker and bluer.
