The Terminal, Man

Here`s a 28mm-scale terminal for Fallout: Wasteland Warfare. In the Fallout computer games, such terminals can be hacked to unlock access to locked doors or safes, or they might give you control over automated gun turrets that might otherwise blast you. You can even play mini-games on some of them, or discover logs and emails that tell the story of the world before and after the final terrible war of 2077. 

In Fallout: Wasteland Warfare, the terminals help make the playing field more immersive, and they play roles in certain gaming scenarios. 

In the real world, these pieces are tiny, and therefore challenging to paint. However, aside from the display screen, I think this one looks appropriately worn. 

A Leaky Barrel of Fun

I`ve painted quite a few barrels by this point, and I`m very pleased to say that I seem to be making some progress. Check out the sharpness of those warning labels! 

I think most of the colours look pretty natural, and I`m particularly pleased by the look and texture of the leaking radioactive fluid. And finally I have some Nuka-Cola bottles I`m not ashamed of, at least in terms of putting the paint in the right places. I`m still having troubles finding the right cola-coloured paint, but this comes the closest yet. 

 

The Itsy Bitsy Spider

I painted the base for this spider quite some time ago, using a technical paint that simulates a kind of crust. The spider itself was painted much more recently, and it turned out pretty well even though all I did was apply a couple of coats of contrast paint and drybrushed a bit of red on the eyes and a couple of the legs. Fearsome. 
 

Phaser-Wielding Ferdinand

Meet Lieutenant Ferdinand Ortega of the USS Encounter. He's the first Starfleet figure I've painted that looks at least half-decent on the table, if not in a close-up photo. I finally found a good colour to use as a highlight against black, which gives his uniform a little more definition. I also tried to highlight the yellow portions of his uniform, but those don't really show up in this photo. The effect is pretty subtle anyway. 
 

Automated Turrets

Have you managed to scrape together the beginnings of a small farm or hut that will allow you to eke out an existence in the post-nuclear wasteland? If so, you need some automated turrets to deter raiders and wildlife. 

I used thin coats of different metallic paints on these gun emplacements, and drybrushed the bases. 
 

Death in a Tin Can

Here's another hero or villain all dressed up in a suit of vintage pre-war power armour. 

Why is it that so many of my painted miniatures tend to look better from the back than the front? 

Bloated Ghoul

This may be my best ghoul yet. I painted him in shades of green, drybrushed the boils in shades of yellow, then added bile for good measure. 

Dogmeats

Dogmeat is the shared name of some loyal hounds appearing as companions in a number of the Fallout computer games. There are also several miniatures of Dogmeat for Fallout: Wasteland Warfare. Above we have the basic version. 

Next, we have one wearing shades. 

And finally, one Dogmeat variant has the luxury of some basic armour plating. 

A Better Class of Ghouls

Jeff's excellent advice on painting ghouls is welcome, but the techniques he described are a hair too advanced for me at this point. So I cheated a bit, adding generous quantities of True Blood paint from Green Stuff World. Combined with ink washes, the blood helped me mask some of my mistakes. I'm quite pleased with the face on the top ghoul--pretty terrifying. 
 

Sergeant Prestown of the Yukon

I took my time painting this pair of miniatures from Pulp Figures. I started with the mounted Mountie, painstakingly entering a zen-like trance in order to keep my hands from shaking as I painted the pinstripes, straps, and stirrups. 

Once I completed Sgt. Prestown, I painted his horse in shades of golden brown. I kind of regret adding an ink wash; even after highlighting over the wash to take away some of the muddiness, I still think the horse looked better pre-wash, as seen below:

My First Masking

While painting these barricades, I noticed a roll of Scotch tape on my desk. I decided to try masking the barricades in order to paint some straight diagonal lines on them. The basic technique worked, but I have to improve my execution. Even so, I'm glad I attempted it! 
 

Silverback Gorilla

Somehow I've obtained quite a number of primate miniatures. I decided to make this gorilla a silverback. 

Billions and Billions of Iterations of Carl Sagan

I think Carl Sagan would be fascinated by the (what appears to be) sudden explosion of AI capability. Despite many prompts I couldn't get Stable Diffusion to get Carl's face really correct, but it came close, and I think the spirit shines through. 

Albert Einstein

Here are some images of Albert Einstein generated by Stable Diffusion in response to my carefully crafted (!) prompts. 

Romulan Unmasked?

At first I thought this figure was a Cardassian, so I painted him in shades of brown. But now that I see it close up, I think this might be another Romulan. Either way, I think the brown suits him. 
 

Romulan Operative

Colours are all right except for the base, which I hate. Facial definition is okay. Disruptor is hard to see. The Tal Shiar would not be pleased. 
 

Ghoulish Failure

I'm not a fan of how Modiphius sculpted these ghouls, but that's no excuse for my terrible paint jobs. I just couldn't get a handle on how to create a rotting flesh effect. Ink washes didn't do the trick. 
 

Mister Handy

Here's a Mister Handy robot from Fallout: Wasteland Warfare. I used some rubble to hide the support pole that gives Mister Handy the illusion of hovering. 

Script Girl in Scarlet

Here's my interpretation of Miss Spingler, the script girl from this Pulp Figures set. Whoever painted the catalogue image did a far better job than me, but I'm content with my version for now. 
 

Son of Frankenstein

Here's my second iteration of Frankenstein's monster from Pulp Figures. I think I like this one better than the first; the skin turned out better, and his features are well-defined. I like my colour scheme, too. 
 

Super Mutant on the Rampage

He's got a big ragged knife and a Molotov cocktail. Look out! 
 

Juana

Here's 28mm-scale little girl. I've named her Juana. I can't really tell what she's clutching in her hands, but I've decided it's a stuffed bunny.

Here is a monk I've named Kalsang. I need some kind of macro lens to get better photos of these; he looks much better in person. 
 

Spot

Here's a 28mm-scale dog from Pulp Figures. There are some weird artifacts in this photo, but you get the general idea. 
 

Silver Subway

Sean gave me a 28mm-scale subway entrance! For the longest time I've been trying to decide on a paint scheme, until finally I settled upon Sylvia's black-and-silver wedding theme. I think the choice gives this subway an old school film noir look. Also, I tried to create the impression of light coming up the stairs from underground, but it's not particularly successful. I'm glad I tried it, though.
