The face of a haunted woman bathed in staccato sparks and ropes and flashes of neon light, senses assaulted by a cacophony of electronic noise that beats in time with not only the light and stop-motion movement across the screen, but our heroine's trauma. Five minutes of off-kilter terror. Takashi Ito, 1982
Somehow, I thought that a Japanese woman and ropes would have led to a completely different context. Instead: epilepsy. I should have known better.
ReplyDeleteA very difficult film to watch, but I can only imagine what it must have been like screened in a theatre instead of on a small monitor. The optical effects, once you squint your way past the assault on the senses, are extremely well thought out. Since this piece was shot on film, getting the exposures right must have been a bear. And then editing it all on 1980's era equipment could easily have taken months. That's dedication!
