I loved this film. I get it that not everyone does, but I thought it was breathtaking and deep. If anything, too much was condensed, so it's a bit like a moody Reader's Digest version of the Apollo program. At least it showed some of the ethics involved in getting Apollo 11 aloft. Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins were professional and collegial, but they were never friends. Neil Armstrong, the only civilian pilot in the program, had a lot to bear: way more than the movie lets on. It could have been a miniseries.
Still, if it's miniseries you want, The Apollo Chronicles is what you absolutely need to see. As much as I grooved on First Man and have a sentimental affection for Apollo 13, the Apollo 11 documentary towers above all of that. And then incrementally better than that by just a hair are The Apollo Chronicles.
For once: hard science on television and in our theatres. Enjoy it while it lasts!
