Stop Battering Fish

I know it's traditional to batter fish, especially for the fish & chips staple, but honestly, fish is so much better without the batter. Earl has spoken!

Down with the Sickness

Jeb Bush is all up in my disease, as the slogan goes
A disease of the throat, lungs, and nose
Seven nights without repose
When will this sickness see its close?
Pretty darn soon I hope

Zombie Panorama

Here are some zombies I painted ages ago. Unfortunately, they're useless, as I haven't finished the rest of the zombies needed for Last Night on Earth. But I'll get to it one day!

Unfinished Viral Poem

Virus, virus, up my nose
Perhaps transmitted through my clothes
Lungs infested with corruption
Leads to nostril yuck eruption

Virus, virus, go away
It's already been three days
And I don't have enough energy left to even finish th

Something New Every Day

Tonight I watched Hatari!, the Howard Hawks safari comedy starring John Wayne. During the opening credits, I noted that Henry Mancini scored the film, and yet I was still surprised when his "Baby Elephant Walk" accompanied a scene of Elsa Martinelli's character walking a trio of baby elephants to a watering hole. I hadn't realized that Mancini's hit had been composed for a soundtrack, nor that the instrumental's title was so literal. As a fan of Mancini and Hawks, this was a real treat. And it even helped me feel a bit better - I've been fighting a bad head cold over the last couple of days. Thanks, Howard and Henry!

Mom and the Wagon

Here is what I believe is quite a nice image of my mom at a relative's wedding near Devon, Alberta. I imagine my Aunt Jean shot this.

Kevin vs. the Poachers

Last month my youngest cousin, Kevin Langergraber, found himself forced to protect the chimpanzees he was studying from poachers and their dogs. The story was covered by The Atlantic, and it's harrowing reading. I'm glad Kevin is okay and that he managed to save most of the chimps, but I know he's agonizing over the ones killed. A senseless tragedy.

Works in Progress

These three metal miniatures came from the special edition of Civilization V. I decided to paint them for use in roleplaying games. For these figures, I abandoned my usual technique and decided to paint the most difficult (to me) sections first, the small bits like flesh, boots, and weapons. It's really an exercise in colouring between the lines at a very small scale. I'm reasonably happy with how these are going so far, but will I ruin them in my attempt to complete them?

The Cage

A couple of weeks ago I painted this 28mm scale cage.
Here's the floor section without the cage.

I figure this cage will come in handy for a number of roleplaying games: Fallout, Dungeons & Dragons, Villains & Vigilantes...any game where a hero or villain or innocent might find themselves captured and in need of rescue.

Guarana Antactica

Guarana, the Brazilian soft drink from...Antarctica..?
It's not bad. Sort of like a Cherry 7-Up.

Kellingtons and Etsell 1918

Here's my great-grandmother, Alice Etsell, flanked by two Kellingtons, George and Tom. I imagine this was shot somewhere in southern Manitoba. Note the old car in the background. A Model T or Model A, perhaps?

Earl of Green Gables, Day 15: The Voyage Home

I used to love flying. And I still love the actual flying part. But airports...ugh.
Flyin' home again...sure looks like we're flyin' home again...
Gonna share my trip photos with my friends
That's what I'll do when we're home again

Earl of Green Gables, Day 14: The Penultimate Day

We bid a sad farewell to Charlottetown this day, with a sad dearth of photos of the quaint architecture. This apartment building was pretty striking, and  snapped a shot with my SLR, but most of my Charlottetown images are captured on my GoPro. I'll strip the footage for stills at a later date.
For this, our final night in Atlantic Canada, we stayed in the cheapest hotel at the Halifax airport we could find. The room was...old, but the restaurantès food was surprisingly good.
For example, this gingerbread cake was excellent.

Earl of Green Gables, Day 13: Points East and Cavendish

We started our day with a short drive to the eastern shore of Prince Edward Island, stopping in this potato field because a bee flew in through the sun roof and landed in my lap.
The red sand of Prince Edward Island is quite arresting. This is a beach at Souris.
This is the lighthouse at Souris.
A view of part of Souris from the lighthouse.
Obligatory lighthouse selfie.
And here's the East Point Lighthouse, located at the eastern tip of the island.
Another obligatory lighthouse selfie.
We then headed northwest, seeking Anne of Green Gables. Signs like this led us there.
We made it! This is the homestead where Lucy Maud Montgomery wrote Anne of Green Gables.
