Sean and I got together to watch the first two episodes of season three of Twin Peaks tonight. With a stack of donuts and slices of cherry pie at the ready, we settled back to revisit Twin Peaks, the Black Lodge, and all those eccentric folks we last saw over 25 years ago...and it was as wonderful and strange as you might imagine. There are still 16 episodes to go, but if these first two hours are reflective of the series as a whole, it's going to be one wild ride. It's as surreal and mysterious and cryptic and gorgeous as you might expect from Lynch, with moments of warmth and humanity acting as vital counterpoint to the dark madness. I'll say no more than that; Twin Peaks shouldn't be experienced vicariously. By way of review, I'll say only that I was very worried going in...and all my worries have been washed away. Twin Peaks is back, as Laura Palmer promised all the way back in 1990. I couldn't be happier.
