My Girlfriend the Geek

Early in our relationship, Sylvia noticed that I enjoyed Star Trek. I had all the DVD sets, and when we first started dating, I was working my way through Deep Space Nine, the second spinoff of the original series. Just after I started watching the third season, she decided that the show looked interesting, and we've been watching it together on and off since then.

We just started the seventh and final season. At this point in the show, the curmudgeon with a heart of gold, Mr. Worf, is mourning the death of his wife, Jadzia Dax. There's a touching scene in which Worf demands a holographic crooner (don't ask) to sing "their song." The singer balks, but Worf insists, and so the song is played and Worf, of course, loses it, yelling and smashing furniture as Klingons are wont to do.

While I'm enjoying all the mayhem, I notice that Sylvia's lower lip is quivering, and that tears are forming in her eyes. I was a little shocked.

"Are you...crying?"

"Poor Worf!" she sobbed.

Sylvia Boucher. Fashion maven, girly-girl...Trekkie.

Heh, heh, heh. You cannot resist the POWER of the Dork Side...

  2. I had hoped, against all hope, that my wife would like the same kind of movies that I do. She doesn't, really, but she really does like the Chop Socky movies. (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, etc)
It didn't really occur to me how much a fan she was until SHE suggested that we rent Hero, with Jet Li.
I'm glad that the two of you have Star Trek.

  3. I am totally offended by Liam's statement. I like the same cheezy chick flicks that you do, and I just tonight told you not to go to The Longest Yard without me. Just because I didn't like Big Trouble in Little China doesn't mean I don't like your movies.

Sorry Earl. I'll stop bitching in your comments section now.

  4. How can you not like Big Trouble in Little China?????? Poor Liam.

Hmmm...I think I just came up with Sylvia's next big geek test. Thanks, Kim!

  6. Let's set the record straight: I am a trendy, fashion-loving little diva who just happens to enjoy the later seasons of DSN - ONLY. I had to try for Earl's sake and as a good girlfriend, to understand the " Star Trek" appeal. He suggested DSN because it is the most palatable of all Star Trek series. It does have some good story lines and I had to tear up when Worf lost his love. It was very moving, what can I say? After living with " Geek Supreme #3" it wears it off on you :) But that's as geeky as I'll ever be!!!!
