Mayor Bill

Mayor William Tanner may not be the best man for the job, but he's the one that took it. Secretly he's pleased by the respect and perks that come with leading the community, but he's decent enough to feel shame about those feelings, so he compensates by doing the best he can to manage local politics fairly. Many townspeople disapprove of their mayor, but not quite enough to do anything about it.

  1. In Exegesis, Philip K. Dick describes the plight of a prophet who finds a mystical door that opens onto a cogent display of the true nature of the Universe. The encounter is brief, and the door is closed forever. The poor man devotes the rest of his life to returning to that door in an effort to expand upon what he had seen, all to no avail.

This picture looks like a depiction of that door. Why wouldn't PKD open the door only to discover the blasé alternate-universe version of himself, Horselover Fat, staring back as if through a scanner darkly? PKD gets 1970's clothes, HLF gets Persian robes. It makes sense, typical 2020.
